Indian Ponds Update

The Indian Ponds Association has been dedicated to preserving the well being of the Mystic, Middle, and Hamblin Ponds. Last year saw an improvement in the eradication of invasive Hydrilla growths in Mystic and Middle Ponds through the use of an herbicide called "sonar". There has been some minor detrimental effects to vegetation next to the Hydrilla but the treatment has been quite effective in reducing the reproduction of the plants to the point that two or more treatments may reduce the Hydrilla to negligible amounts.

Unfortunately some of the Hydrilla tubers can lay dormant for 3 years and monitoring will have to be done to insure new plants haven't started. This is not a problem as frequent measurement of dissolved oxygen, turbidity (clarity) and ph(acidity) for all three ponds is an ongoing activity of IPA. These measurements allow early detection of future problems so that remedies can be applied quickly to prevent algae and other disturbances from getting a toe hold. No Hydrilla has been discovered in Hamblin and the water clarity is very good since IPA spearheaded the ALUM treatment of algae by Barnstable in 2015. Currently IPA is coordinating the removal of invasive Gray Willows at the water's edge.
